Metal-Free Fillings

Powell Dentists Dr. Edwin Guion and Dr. Todd Klein feel that using Metal-free fillings is now the standard procedure for restoration of teeth with decay, or to replace old mercury fillings. Metal fillings expand and contract with hot and cold, resulting in cracks in the enamel of your teeth which can lead to decay. Add to that the unsightliness of metal fillings and you will understand why many of our patients are now asking us to use metal-free fillings exclusively in their treatment.
These fillings can be either made of composite or porcelain materials. The biggest advantage of the composite types of fillings is that they look so much nicer than metal fillings, much more natural. The composite material can be molded to mimic the contours of your teeth, and the color blended to perfectly match your natural tooth color. The result is a restoration that looks and feels like your own teeth. No one will even be able to tell you had any restorative work done!
Another advantage is that the tooth-colored filling actually bonds to the tooth structure. With metal fillings, there's no bond between the tooth and filling, so there is a real possibility of micro-bacterial leakage. This can create new decay. With tooth-colored fillings, there's an actual chemical bond between the tooth and the filling itself, that effectively seals off any potential for leakage. Composite fillings are more conservative because less of your precious, healthy tooth surface needs to be removed to prepare for the composite restoration.
For both beauty and health, we recommend metal-free fillings to our patients. Call our office for a complimentary consultation and learn more about this restorative option.
